The Heritage of the Benin Kingdom
Understanding Bini art begins with understanding the kingdom that made it.
01
The Kingdom of Benin
Founded in the forest region of present-day Edo State, the Benin Kingdom grew into one of West Africa's great states, ruled by the Oba from his palace in Benin City.
02
The Royal Guilds
Bronze casters (Igun Eronmwon), ivory and wood carvers (Igbesanmwan) worked for the court, producing works that recorded history, honoured ancestors and expressed royal authority.
03
Art as Record
Commemorative heads, plaques and altar pieces served as living archives — each motif, crown and coral bead carrying meaning about rank and lineage.
04
A Living Tradition
Today, guild families in Benin City continue to practise these crafts, and contemporary artists reinterpret them for new generations.
